Japan grants US$ 1.7m to Burundi for 2010 elections

The Japanese government has earmarked US$ 1.7 million to help Burundi hold general elections in 2010, diplomatic sources told PANA here on Monday.An agreement to this effect was signed Monday between Augustin Nsanze, the Burundian Minister of External Relations and International Cooperation, and Shigeo Iwatani, the Japanese Ambassador to Burundi residing in Kenya.The amount will be spent on procurement of polling cards.The budget for Burundi’s general elections, due to start in May, amounts to US$ 43 million, most of which is expected to come from foreign donors.
